Greetings all! This is the first official newsletter for subscribers. It’s a rundown of my work over the last month and a small preview of what’s to come. Let’s get to it. News The first and happiest bit of news is that, this morning, Christianity Today announced its 2024 Book Awards—and Letters to a Future Saint is runner-up for the overall category of Book of the Year! I’m honored and humbled. It’s not every day Russell Moore calls you with major professional news to share. See below for more details about a very neat online event that CT is hosting next week along these lines. Writing In the span of four weeks, Christianity Today featured a whopping five of my essays: In addition, on October 30 the Substack newsletter The Raised Hand published an essay of mine called “The Knowledge of God.” Appearances There have been so many, it’s hard to keep track; but here is an incomplete list: More have been recorded but have yet to be published. In person, I gave a lecture in October at Wycliffe College in Toronto (available here, with a response here) as well as a paper in San Diego at the annual meeting for SBL/AAR the weekend before Thanksgiving. The first will be published in a journal sometime in the next year or two; the second I’m less sure about. Both were engaging a senior scholar’s writing on theological interpretation of Scripture (Ephraim Radner in the former, Stephen Fowl in the latter). I’m sensing a theme. Blog Besides links to essays, I published just four posts to the blog in November: Links Some pieces I enjoyed reading in recent weeks: Forthcoming Expect a CT column next week on euthanasia and, quite possibly, a column the week after that on the bloody feasts of Christmastide. In addition, the latest issue of Comment, called “The Call to Forgive,” should go online sometime this month, and will hopefully hit folks’ mailboxes before New Year’s. I have an essay in the issue with the title “Promise, Gift, Command.” Per usual, in the week following Christmas expect on the blog my annual round-up of the year entire year in reading, writing, and so on. Finally, next Thursday, December 12, at 8:00pm EST, there will be a live event on YouTube featuring a conversation with Russell Moore, Gavin Ortlund, myself, and CT editors about Gavin’s and my books.
